Versveldpass

Three kilometers North of Piketberg on the Eendekuil road, a turn to the left will take you onto the scenic Versveld pass which leads to the plateau on the mountain.  The original pass was build in 1899 by hand and without dynamite. The present pass was completed in 1958 when it was tarred. A drive up the winding Versveld pass to the top of the plateau offers a breathtaking view over the region's farms. Beautiful farms (self catering and camping) and  guesthouses, deciduous fruit, citrus and a variety of fynbos and proteas can be seen. There are Khoi san rock paintings in the mountain. A visit to Piketberg is not complete without a visit to the mountain.

On the Piketberg Mountain

Driving up the mountain in Piketberg is like entering a whole new world.  A drive up the mountain offers a surprising and breathtaking view of the region’s large and intensive deciduous fruit and grain- growing farms.  Follow the tarred road on the mountain bordered by an avenue of tall pine trees.  This area is filled beautiful farms where proteas and export deciduous fruit are cultivated.

There are self-catering cottages, camping sites and guesthouses.  The views across the mountains in either direction are breathtaking –across to the west coast shores or east over rolling farm lands and distant mountain ranges towards Ceres. A tar road leads out of the town up the Versveld pass and once on top continues for kilometers to the “end” of the mountain enclave.

A charming couple, Patrick and Karin Carter, own Excelsior Farm which offers accommodation in self-catering cottages. For the outdoor type, they also organize horseback trails which are becoming increasingly popular.

Further along from the Excelsior farm turn-off, on the tar road, is Piquet-Bo-Berg Tea Garden and Nursery owned by the Visser Family. Here you will find a picturesque tea garden set under trees, adjacent to a beautiful rock fishpond.  At the nursery they cultivate more then 30 species of fuchsias which are in high demand, and are sold to large nurseries throughout Cape Town.
