REDELINGHUYS

The almost forgotten Village of Redelinghuys lies approximately 190 km in a North Westerly direction from Cape Town, in the upper reaches of the well known VERLORENVLEI.

It's beauty lies in the surrounding rocky hillside with its almost magical forms and shapes.

VERLORENVLEI (RAMSAR PROTECTED) is one of the largest Wetlands on the West Coast and flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Elands Bay (about 32 km north).  It is renowned for its abundant bird life (more than 250 species), rarity of unique fynbos species and untouched nature.

During the flower season (July - Sept) the fields are covered with a colourful patchwork of flowers, e.g. the Sandveld Lily, also known as the Pink Afrikaner or more commonly known as Red Lily and attracts many hikers and nature lovers.

The vicinity/countryside offers visitors plenty of sunshine during the arid summer season, open space,  peace and tranquility.
Rock art can be viewed at selected spots.

Resettling of indigenous wild life, e.g. Eland, Springbuck, Oribe, Gemsbuck, camal etc. facinate visitors from all over.

At the end of the last century, British soldiers moved along the Verlorenvlei where a skirmish between the Boers and the British took place at Vegkop. (1899 - 1902)

Being a potato farming community, Redelinghuys has established itself as the potato capital of the Sandveld region, as they produce the best of the best.  Other produce such as citrus, vines, vegetables and HEERBONE is being done on a lesser scale.  HEERBONE is a relatively unknown product today, but it used to be exported to Buckingham Palace in the days gone by.
